Ethanhaas.org Is Back, Likely A Fan Site

It was just brought to my attention (thanks, Daniel!) that ethanhaas.org is back up. It looks slightly different from how it was before, along with some added links I don’t remember from the previous incarnation.

It’s a flash site. Some typically cryptic text shows up with a little ominous music playing in the background. Text types out across the center (”The systematic consistencies of self-destruction have perpetuated this day…”) and then an image flashes across the screen:

This is followed by some more cryptic text, along with the now infamous date, 1-18-08.

Down at the bottom of the page are links to the most prominent of the legitimate sites, along with an “Information” link that leads to a forum and a “Contact” link that leads to an email address (7cm@ethanhaas.org).

The whois information from ethanhaas.org has been made private since it was originally researched. This is the first sign that this site is in no way directly related to the actual game. After all, consider that the other registered sites have pertinent (or at least interesting) clues hidden in the registered domain.

Second, the domain was registered on July 6, 2007, after all of this started. Compare to the registration dates at 1-18-08.com (March 30, 2007) and ethanhaaswasright.com (June 7, 2007). It seems unlikely the people running this ARG would wait until after the game started to get something registered for use in it, particularly given the possible danger in fansites sprouting up at those very domains.

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against fansites like ethanhaas.org. My frustration simply comes out of the intentionally cryptic manner it is presented in. The last thing anyone really needs in exploring this game is another misleading path.

In any case, feel free to visit for yourselves. It could always end up being an interesting place to explore the game, provided they drop the charade and just stick to being what they are: Fans, just like the rest of us.
