The Wire Loves You

I am absolutely floored by a discovery I just made. Browsing the TV & Film section of the podcast directory over at iTunes, I noticed there’s an HBO podcast for season five of “The Wire.” This isn’t terribly surprising since just about every television show with a viewer ship of at least twelve seems to warrant a podcast of some kind.

What is extraordinary is that, posted on 1/6/08, is the entire first episode of season five. That’s epic enough to bear repeating: The first episode of this final, fifth season of one of television’s most critically acclaimed series, “The Wire,” is available as a video podcast download.

I’ve already been incredibly impressed with the way HBO has tried to cater to the people who’ve come to love “The Wire.” It’s pretty admirable that they make each episode available via On Demand prior to the actual air time. They dropped the prices on the DVD releases to the point they’re actually affordable: The original releases of seasons one through three were all exorbitantly priced at around the $100 mark, but have long since been marked down to a more reasonable suggested retail price of $59.99, including recently released season four.

But really, offering the premier up as a free podcast download is just awesome. From what I can tell, you do still have to subscribe to the podcast via iTunes (at least that’s how it would appear from “The Wire” homepage), but I’m sure someone more savvy than I would sort out a way to do this another way if they really had a need. The podcast feed also includes a lot of other short behind the scenes kind of fare, which can be hit or miss, but with a show of this quality, at least deserves some attention.
